History of lavender: from sacred plant of antiquity to modern science

Lavender has been part of human culture for over 2,500 years. It has been valued in various eras and civilizations for its fragrance, purifying properties, and health-promoting benefits.

Ancient Egypt: Sacred component of ritual practices

The Egyptians considered lavender a sacred plant. They used it in embalming and in ointments that protected the body and soul.
Lavender essences were so precious that they were even found in the tombs of the pharaohs.

Ancient Greece and Rome: Healing power and luxurious ritual

Greeks and Romans adopted the use of lavender for daily hygiene and home medicine.
They added it to baths, used it for pain, insomnia, or to repel insects.
The name lavandula comes from the Latin lavare – “to wash”.

Middle Ages: Monastic medicine and protection against the plague

Lavender was an integral part of monastic gardens and medical manuscripts. Monks used it for headaches, melancholy, and infections.
During the plague, people wore bags filled with lavender on their bodies – it was believed to purify the air and protect against illness.

Modern times: Perfumery, folk medicine and natural disinfection

From the 17th century onwards, lavender became widespread, especially in France and England. It was used to treat wounds and burns, as a bath additive, and as a natural disinfectant.
Of particular importance was Provence, where the first large lavender fields were planted for the production of essential oil.

20th century: Return to nature and scientific proof of effectiveness

In 1910, French chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé accidentally discovered the healing effects of lavender oil on a burn during an accident. This experience served as the starting point for aromatherapy.
Since then, the effects of lavender have been scientifically studied and confirmed – particularly on the nervous system, the immune system and skin regeneration.

Today: Pure power of nature for body and soul

Today, lavender is being rediscovered – due to its proven effectiveness. Varieties such as Lavandula angustifolia , such as 'Munstead,' deserve special attention. They contain high concentrations of active ingredients and are ideal for gentle use on sensitive groups – children, the elderly, and for internal use.
